Kingfisher is an airline based in Bangalore, India. It started operating on May 9, 2005, with four leased Airbus A320s. The airline is owned by the United Beverages Group.
An existing Indian law says that every airline has to fly a minimum of five years on domestic routes, before it can start flying overseas. Due to this law (which Kingfisher is fighting against) the first international flights are planned for 2010.
Kingfisher serves around 30 destinations in India, among them: Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Jaipur.
In 2007, Kingfisher became a sponsor of the Toyota Formula One team. The contract will last for two years.
The company owns only brand new planes (it’s the first Indian airline doing so): 10 Airbus A320 aircraft, 4 Airbus A319 aircraft, 5 Airbus A321 aircraft and 7 ATR-72 aircraft. Another 75 aircraft are on order. Among the ordered planes is the Airbus A380, making Kingfisher the first Indian airline buying it. Five of them are due for delivery in 2010.
