Iceland Express is Iceland’s first low-fare airline and was founded in 2002. It operated its first flight in February 2003 in a Boeing 737-300 leased from the British Astraeus airlines; a second one was leased in 2004. From 2004 to 2006, two MD-82s were leased from JetX instead.
The company, a subsidiary of the Icelandic Fons Eignarhaldsfélag, originally flew to Copenhagen and London Stansted. From 2006, the route network also included Frankfurt Hahn, Friedrichshafen, Berlin-Schönefeld and Alicante. In 2007, several further Scandinavian destinations, as well as Paris, Basel and Eindhoven were added.
In 2006, Swiss company Hello took over from JetX and is now operating two McDonnell Douglas MD-90s for Iceland Express, also providing all crew members and the callsign (FlyHello).
Iceland Express is planning to start low-fare transatlantic service to New York and Boston with Boeing 757-200 aircraft leased from Astraeus.
According to the airline’s website, the Icelandic tourism has boomed since the foundation of Iceland Express.
