Helios Airways was founded on September 23, 1998. It was the first privately owned Cypriot airline. The first charter flight was operated on May 15, 2000. Scheduled services were added on April 5, 2001. The route network among others covered destinations like Amsterdam, Basel, Birmingham, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Madrid, Newcastle, Warsaw and Zurich and of course Cypriot Paphos and Larnaca.

In 2004 Helios was acquired by Cypriot Libra Holidays Group.
On August 14, 2005, Helios Flight 522 crashed en route from Larnaca to Athens, killing all 121 aboard. The suspected cause was a loss of cabin pressure.
In the wake of this accident Helios was rebranded ajet. The new airline ceased service on October 31, 2006.
